10 Soft Skills for the Modern Jobseeker

Having qualifications and experience in your chosen field is almost 90% of the weight of getting a new job. However, employers are increasingly looking at the soft skills of applicants in an attempt to hire the right fit that is not only proficient but works well alongside the organisation’s values.

Here are 10 Soft Skills that will definitely give you an edge in the corporate world.

1. Communication:

More listening and less talking is the idea and you should always try to listen without interrupting. When speaking you should always adopt a positive tone with convincing body language.

2. Persuasion:

Being persuasive in the workplace means you have to identify what other people care about and then create stories around them in order to make a connection.

3. Negotiation:

When undertaking negotiations you should always listen first and then having an understanding of what the other party wants, you should propose solutions that will provide mutual benefits to both sides.

4. Relationship Building

Building relationships in the workplace is definitely a good idea and one way of doing this is to help others unconditionally in order to obtain their trust, loyalty and cooperation.

5. Empathy:

Being empathetic means taking a genuine interest to understand and acknowledge the feelings of others and looking at the issue from different perspectives and lenses.

6. Positive attitude:

In order to maintain a positive attitude, you should never gossip at work and also be aware of how any criticism or complaining may have an effect on your relationships with other co-workers.

7. Teamwork:

If you work in a team always celebrate other people’s wins and be generous with your praise for other teammates and never claim all the credit for any achievements.

8. Conflict Resolution:

To ensure a harmonious workplace always try to focus on solutions and minimise creating more problems or questions that can lead to unnecessary arguments and or accusations. If you ever do happen to be in the wrong always apologise.

9. Time Management:

Time management is a very important soft skill and in order to master this, you should learn how to prioritise tasks, delegate duties and also be able to say ‘no’ when required.

Key personality traits to get you hired!

With an increasing trend towards migration overseas, many Sri Lankans are finding themselves in demand as the labour pool becomes smaller.

When it comes to being recruited, having a colourful and attractive CV will definitely get you ahead but your personality counts for as much or even more, than your qualifications and experience.

Your personality traits, for example being friendly, kind and polite will project well in a face-to-face or online interview. Potential employers will often evaluate your personality traits during the interview and selection process.

It can be considered that the personality traits a candidate displays at the interview will most likely echo in the workplace. So if an employer is looking for someone honest, trustworthy and responsible, by showcasing those or similar personality traits at an interview, candidates stand a better chance of moving forward in the interview process.

All employees prefer a workplace that is comfortable and easy to work in. Having team members with negative personality traits can have an impact on effectiveness and team work.

How can I show off my personality?

It is the little things like smiling, minding your manners and your general behaviour and attitude, that contribute to your personality when it comes to an interview. Another opportunity is when replying to questions posed by the interviewer as this can provide a glimpse of your personality to potential employers.

There are many studies and theories surrounding the topic of personalities, however, you should always put yourself in the shoes of the employer to obtain a clear grasp of what kind of personality they are seeking.

Being trustworthy, loyal, efficient, honest, reliable, diligent, responsible and willing to learn, are generally among the most sought-after personality traits by business owners.

So the next time you get the chance to show off your personality do a bit of research and understand what your future employer is on the lookout for.

Is Remote Working here to stay?

Since the dawn of the Covid-19 global Pandemic the concept of remote working or work from home (WFH) has very much evolved to become part of the modern norms and conventions of the modern workplace.

Can I work from home?

This most likely depends on the type of work you do. Some industries such as hospitality and the media are subject to regular on duty working hours, however a majority of jobs can now be performed on a remote basis.

Should I ask to work from home?

This somewhat depends on where you live and the location of the office. If you live reasonably close to the office and your workplace offers hybrid flexible working solutions, then you should most likely refrain from making such a request. It all depends on your situation.

Do I have to come into the office?

In addition to figuring out if your job can be performed on a remote basis as an individual you should consider if you have the required facilities to perform your duties at your residence and also if you desire to come into office.

Some employees perform better in an office based environment where the help and support of others is always on hand and collaboration can be achieved easily.

Is the idea of ‘the office’ now dead?

Definitely not. Many industries and sectors still rely on offices in order to conduct their operations. Despite today’s advances in modern technology, depending on the scale of the organization a concentrated office environment is a big factor in aligning employees to the visona, mission and goals of the business.

According to studies approximately 16% of companies in the world are 100% remote and some 74% of workers say that having the option to work remotely would make them less likely to leave a company.

If you are curious about efficiency under WFH, 77% of remote workers say they’re more productive when working from home. The Virtual Office of the future will host board meetings using virtual reality headsets and would be complete with a lobby and even a digital receptionist.
