Sri Lanka’s Brain Drain – A boost for local job seekers?

31 May 2022

According to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Sri Lanka’s labour migration has increased by 286 per cent (year-on-year) in the last two decades.

As of May 2022, the total number of individuals that have migrated from Sri Lanka to secure foreign employment through the routes of self-employment and licensed foreign employment firms was 105,821.

The key destinations for outward labour migration were Kuwait, the UAE and South Korea. It is interesting to note that some 67,156 individuals had migrated without the intervention of licensed foreign employment agencies and around 38,665 persons have migrated with the support of foreign employment agencies including 25, 224 females.

New Opportunities

Despite the ongoing brain drain taking place one of the plus points of this situation is that it provides more opportunities for other job seekers that remain in Sri Lanka.

With increased outward migration, the number of job vacancies that can be accessed by others is on the increase. This means that the chances of securing employment is higher as the number of aspiring candidates is less.

But in order to shine above the rest of the others, you still require the desired qualifications and experience. This is important as it will make the difference between being selected and/or rejected.

In order to make the most of this situation, you should keenly observe the current demand for your chosen profession and also the desired qualifications and experience that are demanded by potential employers.

This will give you the best chance to get ahead of the other applicants by proving your worth.
